University of Miskolc is one of the oldest universities in Hungary, located in the southern part of Hungary near the Croatian border in the city of Miskolc. The University of Miskolc offers a wide range of academic programs across various disciplines. These include technical and engineering fields, law, music, arts, economics and more. University of Miskolc has adapted to the changing educational landscape by expanding its academic portfolio over the years.
The university’s faculties cover a wide spectrum of academic disciplines and fields. It is engaged in research activities and contributes to the advancement of knowledge in various areas.
The University of Miskolc has gained recognition on the international stage. In 2021, it was ranked in the 450-500 group in the global QS university ranking under the subcategory “Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing.”
The university has unique traditions and cultural heritage, such as the Selmec, a traditional torch procession of graduate students, which has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

History of the University of Miskolc:
In 1735, the University of Miskolc’s predecessor, known as the School of Mines and Metallurgy (Bergschule), was established in Selmecbánya, which is now known as Banská Štiavnica, located in Slovakia. This was the world’s first institution of higher education with a focus on subjects such as mining and metallurgy.
In 1762, Maria Theresa granted the status of an academy to the School of Mines (Bergakademie).
In 1846, foresters also received their education at this institution.
In 1920, the Selmec Academy was forced to relocate to the border town of Sopron in Austria when Selmec became part of Czechoslovakia at the time.
In 1949, the National Assembly of Hungary ordered the establishment of the Heavy Industry University in Miskolc – this was Nehézipari Műszaki Egyetem (the Technical University for Heavy Industry).
Later, technical faculties (the current faculties of Earth Science and Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Informatics) expanded with other faculties offering programs in social sciences.
In 1981, law programs started.
In 1983, the Faculty of Law was established.
In 1990, the university’s name changed to the University of Miskolc, and at the same time, the Faculty of Economics was founded.
In 1997, the Institute of Arts became a faculty, while the Liszt Ferenc College of Music in Miskolc merged into the Bartók Béla Faculty of Music at the university.
In 2001, the institute launched its first bachelor’s program in healthcare studies.
In 2005, the Institute of Healthcare Studies gained academic status and became the seventh faculty of the University of Miskolc, the Faculty of Healthcare.
In 2014, the Selmec (traditional torch procession of graduate students originating from Selmecbánya) was declared by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of the world.

Internationalization is an integral part of the University of Miskolc’s institutional development strategy. The university’s goal is to provide its students, faculty, academics, and business partners with a stimulating and facilitating international environment in which they can conduct research and carry out academic activities at the highest level.
To achieve this goal, the university sets the following objectives:
- Enhance the quantity and quality of English-taught educational programs.
- Increase the mobility of incoming and outgoing students and staff, as well as the number of invited professors.

Language of Instruction at University of Miskolc:
The language of instruction at the University of Miskolc in Hungary is both English and Hungarian. The university provides comprehensive English language education services for those interested in studying in Hungary up to the doctoral level.
Language Training Center of the University:
On March 23, 2020, based on the joint directive of the Rector and the Central Office of the University of Miskolc it was decided:
- Classes are held in a distance education format.
- All students registered for courses in the Neptun system will receive a message from the course instructor regarding the format of distance education until March 20.
- IOK instructors are available through the contact information provided in the “Instructors” menu.
IOK, along with examination centers, organizes and conducts all language exams of Corvinus University, ORIGÓ.
Language Training Center The main task of IOK is to provide high-quality language education in English, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and Latin to the students of the University of Miskolc.
Since the goal of the University of Miskolc is to educate versatile professionals in line with the needs of the modern age, it offers language classes as well as professional language and skills training.
IOK instructors have extensive experience in teaching technical, economic, legal, and medical language.
The University of Miskolc, with its training for legal translators and technical translators, offers professional communication training at the workplace for mechanical engineering and economics students, preparing them for employment in foreign countries, thereby contributing to the employment opportunities of its students in the job market.
The University of Miskolc currently serves as an examination center for four reputable and professional language exam centers.
As part of the internationalization process of the University, the University of Miskolc also provides English and Hungarian language training for foreign students who come to the university on scholarships.

For Bachelor’s Degree Programs:
- Completion of a pre-university engineering course.
- After completing the pre-university course, applicants are eligible to take the university entrance exam.
- The duration of these courses is one academic year, equivalent to 9 months.

Academic System of University of Miskolc:
The Bologna Process, introduced in Hungary in 2006, is a series of structural reforms and governmental tools aimed at comparability in standards and the quality of higher education qualifications in the European Union.
This process establishes coordinated operations and higher education institutions in the European Higher Education Area based on common key values. International students have the opportunity to study within the flexible European framework with various opportunities such as credit transfer between countries and the uniformity of educational qualifications.
European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS):
ECTS is a tool from the European Higher Education Area for transparency and comparability of studies and courses. This helps students move between countries, and their educational qualifications and courses are recognized abroad. ECTS credits represent learning based on defined learning outcomes and the workload associated with them.
Levels of Education at the University of Miskolc, Hungary:
Traditional programs at the college and university levels have gradually been replaced by a three-tier system since 2006:
- Bachelor’s Programs: The latest program lasts for 6-8 semesters, and the required credits are approximately 180-240 units.
- Master’s Programs: These programs last for 2-4 semesters, and the required credits are about 60-120 units.
- Doctoral Programs: These programs lead to degrees such as “Doctor of Philosophy” (Ph.D) or “Doctor of Liberal Arts” (DLA). These programs last for 48 months and require the completion of a minimum of 180 units, along with publication and teaching credits.
- Continuous Master’s Programs (Traditional University-Level Diploma):
- Continuous Master’s Programs are offered in some fields without division and long-term duration (5 to 6 years). Examples include programs in fields such as human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, architecture, law, and several art education programs.
After graduation and in addition to the higher education diploma, a special DS document is provided to students. This document contains information about the diploma holder, the type of qualification, the main institution, the level of competence, and the course content.

Newly enrolled students at Miskolc have two basic options regarding their place of residence.
They can either live in one of the university dormitories or look for an apartment for rent outside the university campus.
Student Dormitories at University of Miskolc:
The University of Miskolc generally has seven student dormitories, Bolyai Hostel 1-6, and UNI-Hotel. These dormitories are located on the university campus, making all university buildings easily accessible.
For international students, the University of Miskolc automatically provides a dormitory placement.
Student dormitories Bolyai Hostel E/6 are open to Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) students and participants of the Scholarship Program for Christian Youth (SCYP) studying at the master’s level.
Bolyai Hostel E/4 welcomes Erasmus students.
Accommodations at UNI Hotel are reserved for doctoral students with SH and SCYP scholarships.
While Erasmus students pay their monthly dormitory fees by check, students with university scholarships pay the dormitory fees directly, as dormitory assistance is one of the benefits they receive.

To search for an apartment, you may need the assistance of a student guide.
The monthly rent for a two-room apartment can range from 80,000 to 120,000 Forints, equivalent to 220-320 Euros.
Prices may be influenced by the surrounding environment, distance from the university, or the city center.
It’s important to know that water and electricity bills and property management costs are not included in the rental fees.

Internet Access:
In building A1, there are two large computer rooms on the second floor, operated by the university’s computer center.
Additionally, you will have access to Wi-Fi in your rooms in the dormitories. Internet access is also available in the university library.
Printing and Photocopying You can find a stationary shop in building A1, in the lobby. Additionally, there is one on the ground floor of building A1, close to the entrances near the student dormitories.
This machine provides printing and photocopying (including color) as well as scanning. Several photocopy machines are installed in various parts of the university, such as in the university blocks and the library.
Shopping:
Students are recommended to visit nearby supermarkets like LIDL and TESCO for shopping or go to the city center for their daily needs. There is a small tobacco shop near the canteen.
Most stores, supermarkets, shops, and shopping centers are relatively concentrated within a short radius at squares like Miskolc Plaza, Szinvapark, and the traditional market in the city center.
If you go in any direction from CENTRUM, you will certainly find what you need within a few minutes along the main roads.
Likewise, you will encounter post offices and banks. Some hypermarkets like Auchan, Metro, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi are located in the outskirts of the city, but they can be easily reached directly by city buses.
Most supermarkets allow you to pay with a bank card.
Dining and Drinking:
The university has a large restaurant open from Tuesday to Saturday. You can choose a fixed menu with 2 options for soup and 3 options for main courses for a fixed price of 890 Forints.
- Lunch hours: 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM
- Tuesday to Friday: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Saturdays: 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM
If you purchase a lunch receipt in advance for a full month, 12 meals, or half a month, 6 tickets at a lower price, or the fixed menu price may be less, and you can use them during the purchased month.
Music and Entertainment:
The Rockool club and E/2 club provide regular party opportunities for students. The MEN music festival is organized every year in May.
Sports:
Tennis courts, a running track, basketball and streetball courts, a football field, a sports hall, and a swimming pool can be found on the university campus.
Fitness and gym rooms are located in the fitness building opposite UNI Hotel. You can purchase a permanent card for the entire semester for 5,000 Forints and use these sports facilities from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.
A gym is available in student dormitory E4, ground floor, where you can use it for free from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Since this program is free, most students like to go there, so you should register quickly as it may get crowded later. You can join regular physical education classes with Hungarian students.
Sports and games that can be chosen include fitness, aerobics/Zumba, Thai boxing, karate, Wing Tsun kung fu, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and American football.
There is also a swimming pool on the campus. From Tuesday to Saturday, it is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on Sunday to Monday, it is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The ticket cost for students with a student ID card is 950 Forints. If you buy season tickets or use the pool during specific hours, early mornings or late evenings, the prices are lower.
ATM:
Unfortunately, there are no banks within the university’s premises, but you can find several ATMs to withdraw cash.
For any other financial transactions, you will need to go into the city and find a bank: Erste, Raiffeisen, Citibank, UniCredit
Postal Services:
The university’s post office provides all postal services. It is located behind the canteen.
- Working hours: Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM
- Lunch break: 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM
The latest postal fees are displayed at the customer service desk. Postboxes in Hungary are emptied daily.
Library:
This university has a library network, including the central library and faculty libraries, institutes, and groups.
The total inventory includes about 600,000 books and 2,663 periodicals, and the library serves 100,000 users annually.
The library museum Selmec Collection preserves a complete collection of about 30,000 volumes of books from Alma Mater’s old Selmecbánya library from 1735 to 1919.
A permanent exhibition displays a unique collection of technical publications from the 16th to 19th centuries, amounting to thousands of volumes.
Annually, Hungarian and foreign visitors preserve the historical collection of educational and youth-life artifacts and display them in a permanent exhibition.

Healthcare services for scholarship recipients If you are a Hungarian scholarship student in the diaspora, you have two types of health insurance:
- Social Health Insurance (TAJ)
- Additional Private Health Insurance
However, private health insurance is processed very quickly, but its arrangement may take some time, so it is strongly recommended to leave your home country with health insurance for the initial period in Hungary.
Obtaining the TAJ card, which is the social health insurance card, takes more time.
Healthcare services for students at their own expense Financially self-sustaining students are recommended to have private health insurance, and the International Relations Office staff is ready to help in this regard.
The University of Miskolc has a contract with a specific insurance company, which may vary from term to term. If you prefer to choose a different private health insurance, you should go to the selected health insurance fund and make a separate agreement.
General healthcare information Emergency and immediate medical care for foreigners is free, while in other cases, you may be required to pay for medical treatment.
Citizens of the European Union are insured based on the European Health Insurance Card when in another member state and enjoy equal social security rights and obligations as the citizens of that member state.
The European Union card only covers “essential healthcare” services such as dialysis, oxygen therapy but does not authorize the use of delayed healthcare services.

The STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM scholarship program was launched by the Hungarian government in 2013. This program is based on intergovernmental agreements in the field of education between the Hungarian government and partner countries.
The aim of the scholarship program is to promote cultural understanding, economic relations, and political cooperation between Hungary and other countries.
The STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM scholarship program is administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and coordinated by the Tempus Public Foundation.
